WELCOME
At the Hive’s Applied Research Lab, we harness the power of community-based applied research to uplift immigrant communities. We turn real-world insights into evidence-based action by exploring the challenges, strengths, and aspirations of the individuals we serve. Through rigorous research methods, data analysis, and cross-sector collaboration, we inform and shape programs that expand language access, increase economic mobility, and promote social equity for marginalized populations.

ABOUT US
The Applied Research Lab at the Hive is a formally structured research division operating under the non-profit Columbus Literacy Council | CLC WORKS | The Hive. As a bona fide research organization, we generate original research, conduct needs assessments, analyze quantitative and qualitative data, and apply evidence to practice. Our multidisciplinary team includes program evaluators, sociologists, educators, linguists, and data analysts.
Our work is centered around three intersecting pillars:
-
English Language Acquisition
-
Youth Development
-
Workforce Development
These pillars are aligned with federal and state workforce and education priorities, and our research is continuously used to design, test, evaluate, and scale interventions.

RESEARCH PROGRAMS
Our applied research is grounded in real community needs and translates directly into programs that create change. We focus on three interconnected areas—English Language Development, Youth Development, and Workforce Development—that are essential for empowering immigrant communities. Through targeted research and action, we explore what works, why it works, and how to expand access to language learning, educational growth, and economic opportunity.

English Language Development
Research-driven strategies to enhance ESL learning from beginner to advanced levels, including contextual instruction and conversation-based engagement.

Youth Development
Exploring programs that empower immigrant youth through life coaching, academic enrichment, and summer learning opportunities.

Workforce Development
Studying effective pathways to employment through job readiness training, industry-recognized certifications, and hands-on internship experiences.
